The Derby winner Cossack was strongly fancied to follow-up with a second Classic victory and set a strong gallop from the start. Jovial and Van Tromp exchanged places over the first mile and a half, both settling behind the leader, but at the distance Van Tromp challenged Cossack on the Stand side and readily took the lead to win by an easy 2 lengths in 3 minutes 20 seconds. The winner was viewed as a lazy but talented horse. He defeated Cossack twice more in his later career, including the Goodwood Cup in 1848. Over Round 119%
